Mba’ Alungay Bissala: Video Documentary Production Project

Project Abstract
Mba’-Alungay-Bissala (Our Voices Shall Never Perish) is a video documentary project on everyday politics of Sama people in the shared borders of the Philippine, Indonesian and Malaysian Borneos; where their narratives weave a new perspective toward understanding the sea-nomadic existence and the sea-faring peoples’ experiences of war, migration, and the challenges to social integration as, rather than purely descriptive ethnography, a political discourse; historical memory especially of pre-colonial Southeast Asian maritime society is implored to rationalize the building and redefining of Sama-diaspora-communities’ regional and national identities, and locate this ethnic-religious community in the construction of cultural majorities and minorities.

Collective Memories, Jargons, Rituals and Perceptions: Toward a Broader Scope and General Recognition of Pengetahuan Lokal in Disaster Preparedness

Project Abstract
The project attempts to extend and broaden the scope of pengetahuan lokal (local knowledge) from the prevailing notion of it in disaster preparedness literature. Particularly, it will look into communities’ collective memories, perceptions and concepts of environmental disasters—while considering the Indonesian context. In doing so, the research addresses the issues of marginalization and exclusion of community-based knowledge and the struggle for social justice in the context of environmental disaster.
Re-imaging Citizenship under Globalization: Perspectives of Global Workers in Malaysia and Japan on the Discourse and Practice of Political Agency

Project Abstract
This project seeks to explore how global workers conceive, recast and/or practice their own political agency as citizens, in view of the ‘disembedding’ or ‘deterritorializing’ nature of their work. It aims to generate new ideas and sharper handles on citizenship under globalization drawn from Asian experiences, by engaging in sustained conversation with call center agents and migrant workers in Malaysia and Japan. Through this action research, the researcher also hopes to set up links among like-minded individuals and groups in the region, who are similarly exploring how to strengthen citizens’ political agency in the face of globalization.

Abstract:

In 2009, the Lao government approved a decree for the regulation and
operation of Lao Non-Profit Associations (NPAs), a significant
development. However, civil society is still a rather unknown concept
in Laos. This study aims to seek appropriate and inclusive non-profit
models from Philippine Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), which
already provide a legislative framework for the registration and role
of organizations in promoting Child?s Rights. Such CSOs will be
treated as lessons for the further development of NPAs in Laos. This
study focuses on Metro Manila where a significant number of
Philippines CSOs base their offices and activities. I use Philippines
civil society as a case for comparison as it is one of the most
vibrant and active in Asia with its deep and expansive root in society
as demonstrated by the high level of participation from various
sectors, including Child RightsBased Organisations. In fact, the
Philippines is the first country in ASEAN that has ratified the United
Nations of the Convention the on the Rights of the Child (CRC)in 1990.
Since then CRC has served as a tool for Child Rights
Organisations operational, networking, and fundraising roles. The
purpose of this paper is thus not to draw any remarkable conclusion or
suggestion for policy making but, rather, to examine the similarities
and differences between the two countries.
