The Nippon Foundation Fellowships for Asian Public Intellectuals (API Fellowships Program) was launched in July 2000 as a multinational program designed to create a pool of public intellectuals in the region.

Public intellectuals are those—academics, researchers, media professionals, NGO activists, social workers, public servants, artists, creative writers and others who are committed to working for the betterment of society by applying their professional knowledge, wisdom and experience.

By formulating a community of public intellectuals in the region, the API Fellowships Program aims to promote mutual learning between Asian public intellectuals and to contribute to the growth of public spaces in which effective responses to regional needs can be generated.

It operates through a partnership established between The Nippon Foundation and five Partner Institutions namely, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies of Kyoto University, the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, the School of Social Sciences of the Ateneo de Manila University, and the Institute of Asian Studies of Chulalongkorn University.
